About This Series

The Greysheet Catalog (GSID) of the $5 Classic Head Gold, Proof series of Pre-1933 Gold Coinage in the U.S. Coins contains 10 distinct entries with CPG® values between $216,000.00 and $1,080,000.00.
In 1834, a new design for the half eagle gold coin was introduced with a ribbon binding Liberty's hair, bearing the word LIBERTY, replaced the previous liberty cap design. The motto was omitted from the reverse. The so-called "Classic Head" series was short lived (1838-1840). Proof examples of these early gold coins are extremely rare and highly sought by advanced collectors.
