For earlier issues, see East Africa and Zanzibar. Tanzania came into being on 26 April 1964, with the merger of the mainland territory of Tanganyika—which had gained its independence from the United Kingdom in late 1961—and the former sultanate of Zanzibar, an archipelago in the Indian Ocean.
