About Cuba

The territory that is now Cuba was a Spanish colony from 28 October 1492 when claimed by Christopher Columbus, until the Spanish-American War (21 April 1898 - 13 August 1898), when Cuba was occupied by the United States and gained nominal independence as a de facto United States protectorate in 1902. Cuba gained formal independence from the United States on 20 May 1902 as the Republic of Cuba.
