The unprecedented crossover underscores his personal efforts to combat “grade inflation.”
Obverse Description
Lady Liberty is seated on a stone wall, facing left, with an olive branch in her extended right hand and a ribbon bearing the word LIBERTY in her resting left hand. IN GOD WE TRUST us carved into the base and her seat is otherwise adorned with a bundle of wheat. 13 stars adorn the periphery with the date at the lower middle.
Reverse Description
An eagle is centered in the design with the weight of the coin listed below as "420 GRAINS. 900 FINE." The words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TRADE DOLLAR adorn the top and bottom periphery with a ribbon stating the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM above the eagle's head.
Book Reference
Designer: William Barber. Weight: 27.22 grams. Composition: .900 silver, .100 copper (net weight .7874 oz. pure silver). Diameter: 38.1 mm. Edge: Reeded. Mints: Philadelphia, Carson City, San Francisco.
Key to Collecting: Circulated trade dollars are relatively common, with typical grades being EF and AU. Many have been cleaned, often with abrasive substances. Many have Chinese chopmarks, considered in this instance to be an advantage (although a deduction is typically made from the price) rather than an impairment, as these are marks of commerce. Mint State coins are fairly scarce, particularly if unimpaired, and are mostly in grades from MS-60 to MS-62 or MS-63. Truly choice examples as well as gems are in the distinct minority.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Most trade dollars were made in strictly utilitarian fashion. Weaknesses are often seen, including on Liberty, her hair details, and the obverse stars. On the reverse the eagle should be checked, particularly the lower areas including the feathers on the legs.
Proof Coins: Most Proofs on the market are dated from 1878 through 1883, these being the pieces most cherished by numismatists in the early days (in view of the Proof-only status of these years). There was a market speculation in Proofs in late 1879 and early 1880, resulting in the extraordinary production of 1,987 Proofs for the latter year. Today Proofs are on the market in all states of preservation, and some care must be taken to select a choice one.
