The 20 cent coin, also known as a "double dime" by some numismatists, was produced from 1875 through 1878 and was designed by William Barber. The coin proved unpopular and became one of the shortest-lived of all coin series, but for type enthusiasts the 20 cent coin offers a host of numismatic and financial challenges.
The indisputable series key is the 1876-CC, which had a mintage of only 10,000 -- most of which were melted. Today the 1876-CC 20 cent coin less than 20 survivors in all grades, according to Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). In large part due to the scarcity of the 1876-CC, relatively few collectors ever even attempt -- let alone complete -- a date-and-mintmark collection of twenty cent pieces.
Indeed, much of the sales activity for this denomination is from type collectors who pursue perhaps just one specimen for their collections. Most commonly the issue many collectors purchase is the 1875-S, which is the most common example and is relatively affordable throughout most of the circulated grades and available in the MS grades. The other issues in this series are much scarcer than the 1875-S and are much more challenging even in the lower circulated grades.
Obverse Description
Lady Liberty is seated on a rock, holding a staff, and bearing a shield with the word LIBERTY on a flowing ribbon. 13 stars have adorn the periphery and the date appears at the bottom center.
Reverse Description
An eagle is prominently featured with the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA * TWENTY CENTS around the periphery. Mint mark, if any, appears in the vertical space between the eagle and Y C of TWENTY CENTS.
Book Reference
Designer: William Barber. Weight: 5 grams. Composition: .900 silver, .100 copper. Diameter: 22 mm. Edge: Plain. Mints: Philadelphia, Carson City, San Francisco.
Key to Collecting: Mint State and Proof examples are readily available for inclusion in a type set, the 1875-S circulation strike being the most plentiful, as might be expected from its overwhelmingly large mintage, and the 1875-CC a distant second, although the 1875 and 1876 Philadelphia pieces are offered now and then. Grades usually range from VF to AU. This denomination did not circulate long enough to generate many wellworn pieces, such as AG-3 or G-4. Mint State coins are available for 1875, 1875-CC, 1875-S, and 1876 (the 1876-CC being a rarity). Generally, the 1875-CC and 1875-S (in particular) are the most often seen, in grades from MS-60 upward.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: These characteristics vary from coin to coin. Points to check include the eagle’s wing feathers, especially at the top of the wings, and the letters around the border. Generally, the 1875 and 1876 Philadelphia coins are the best struck and have the deepest luster.
Proof Coins: The easiest to find are the 1875 and 1876. The 1877 and 1878 are of lower mintages and are also in greater demand due to their Proof-only status (no related circulation strikes were made). Avoid dark and deeply toned pieces. Quality can be a problem.
