Designer: Christian Gobrecht. Weight: 16.718 grams. Composition: .900 gold, .100 copper (net weight: .48375 oz. pure gold). Diameter: 27 mm. Edge: Reeded. Mints: Philadelphia, Carson City, Denver, New Orleans, San Francisco.
Key to Collecting: Today, most pieces are in such grades as VF and EF, less often AU, though most are in circulated grades. Mint State examples of this type are rare in all instances. Choice pieces and especially gem pieces are major rarities and are seldom seen. In recent times the finding of long-lost sunken treasures aboard the SS Central America (lost in 1857), SS Brother Jonathan (1865), and SS Republic (1865) has provided some higher-grade pieces but not enough to dramatically change the collecting landscape.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Most $10 pieces of this style are fairly well struck, but it will pay to check such features as the hair details of Liberty, the star points, the shield and feathers of the eagle, and the denticles.
Proof Coins: Proofs occasionally come on the market, typically dated from 1858 onward, most often in the early 1860’s. Each and every date is exceedingly rare in Proof format especially if choice or gem. Interestingly, such specimens were struck with great care, typically have beautifully frosted surfaces, and represent a triumph of the coinage art that generally faded in quality as the years went by!
