Obverse Description
Winged Liberty, or Mercury (the Roman god of commerce), is depicted facing left with LIBERTY spelled around the periphery. IN GOD WE TRUST appears left of the neck and the date is positioned just below the bust around 5 o'clock. The designer's initials "AW" appear to the right of the neck.
Reverse Description
A large torch is centered vertically adorned with an axe head and olive branches. UNITED STATES OF AMERICAN * ONE DIME * is spelled out around the periphery.

Key to Collecting: Circulated coins are very common and are not of importance due to the plenitude of Mint State coins. For inclusion in a type set, there are many later dates available in gem grades for relatively low cost, although many individual dates and mints are rare. Among coins of the early 1940’s, there are many opportunities to acquire gem pieces with sharply struck features.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Many if not most Mercury dimes exhibit areas of light striking, most notably in the center horizontal band across the fasces, less so in the lower horizontal band. The bands are composed of two parallel lines with a separation or “split” between. The term FB, or Full Bands, denotes coins with both parallel lines in the center band distinctly separated. In addition, some Mercury dimes may display weak striking in other areas (often not noticed by certification services or others), including at areas of the obverse rim and the date. For a really deluxe specimen, find one with FB plus sharp striking in other areas as well. A gold version, struck in 2016 for the design’s centennial, is considered an interesting standalone within the series, not necessary for a type set.
Proof Coins: Readily available within the context of the mintage. Struck only from 1936 to 1942, with the later issues having higher production. The Proofs are from completely polished dies, including the portrait.
