Key to Collecting: Symbolically capping the life story told by the Lincoln Bicentennial cents of 2009, today’s cents feature a reverse design “emblematic of President Lincoln’s preservation of the United States as a single and united country.” The shield motif was designed by U.S. Mint Artistic Infusion Program Associate Designer Lyndall Bass, and engraved by Mint medallic sculptor (now chief engraver) Joseph Menna. In addition to a new reverse design, the Shield Reverse cents feature a modern update of Victor David Brenner’s original portrait for the 1909 Lincoln cent.

Circulation-strike cents minted in Philadelphia in 2017 bear a P mintmark in honor of the 225th anniversary of coinage there. In 2019 some special cents were minted at West Point for collectors.

Cents of this design are minted in large quantities. They are readily available in the numismatic marketplace, and have successfully entered circulation through normal distribution channels.

For 2026, the Mint is launching a program in honor of the American Semiquincentennial. In addition to a series of commemorative coins and medals, the Mint will produce circulating coins with special one-year-only designs.The dual dates 1776–2026 will be used on all circulating denominations. The cent and the nickel will otherwise retain their original designs. The dime, quarter, and half dollar will feature entirely new motifs.

By executive order of President Donald J. Trump, 2026 will also be the last year of production for the cent. The Mint has confirmed that it will strike the denomination until its existing supply of planchets runs out.

Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Striking is generally sharp.

Proof Coins: High-quality Proofs (PF-69 and 70) are common in the secondary market. All Proof Lincoln, Shield Reverse, cents are mirror Proofs, usually with cameo or frosted contrast between the devices and the fields. Cents with other special formats, such as an Enhanced Uncirculated finish, have been made for collectors.
