Obverse Description
Lady liberty is seated on a rock bearing a shield with the word LIBERTY. 13 Stars frame the periphery with the date at the bottom middle under the rock.
Reverse Description
The heraldic eagle is centered in the design with the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and HALF DOL. around the periphery. A ribbon above the eagle's head bears the motto IN GOD WE TRUST

Designer: Christian Gobrecht, with motto added by James B. Longacre or someone else on Mint sta!. Weight: 1866–1873: 12.44 grams; 1875–1891: 12.5 grams. Composition: .900 silver, .100 copper. Diameter: 30.6 mm. Edge: Reeded. Mints: Philadelphia, San Francisco, Carson City.
Key to Collecting: Now, at long last, finding a well-struck Liberty Seated half dollar with good eye appeal will not be much of a problem! The mintage quantities were greatest for the years 1866 through 1878, and today among worn specimens these are the most often seen. Later issues, 1879 through 1891, were made in small quantities as there was no call for such pieces in commerce. Mint State coins are quite plentiful, mostly dated during the low-mintage years beginning in 1879, an interesting situation that has a parallel among gold dollars and $3 pieces.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Generally, the striking of this type is fairly good. Still, the same usual points should be checked: the details of Liberty (including the head) on the obverse, the stars, and on the reverse, check the eagle.
Proof Coins: Proofs were made of each year and exist in proportion to their mintage figures. Generally, those of the 1880’s are choicer than those of earlier years.
