Obverse Description

Lady liberty is seated on a rock bearing a shield with the word LIBERTY. 13 Stars frame the periphery with the date at the bottom middle under the rock. Arrows appear to the left and right of the date.

Reverse Description

The heraldic eagle is centered in the design with the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and HALF DOL. around the periphery. A ribbon above the eagle's head bears the motto IN GOD WE TRUST

Book Reference

Designer: Christian Gobrecht, as modified by James B. Longacre or another staff member, with the arrows added during the chief engravership of William Barber. Weight: 12.5 grams. Composition: .900 silver, .100 copper. Diameter: 30.6 mm. Edge: Reeded. Mints: Philadelphia, San Francisco, Carson City.

Key to Collecting: Circulated coins are available, often dated 1874 (the highest mintage), and in nearly any grade desired through lower Mint State levels. Today, choice Mint State coins are quite scarce, as the mintage, although about five million, was much smaller than preceding and later (especially) without-arrows coins. At the gem category, such coins are very rare but not as rare as quarter dollars of this type.

Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Points to check include the details of Liberty, the obverse stars, and the eagle on the reverse. Many are casually struck, but some are sharp. It will pay to be particular.

Proof Coins: Probably 75% or more of the mintage of 1,250 pieces survive.
