Obverse Description
Lady liberty is seated on a rock bearing a shield with the word LIBERTY. 13 Stars frame the periphery with the date at the bottom middle under the rock.
Reverse Description
The heraldic eagle is centered in the design with the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and QUAR. DOL. around the periphery. A ribbon above the eagle's head bears the motto IN GOD WE TRUST

Designer: Christian Gobrecht, as modified by James B. Longacre. Weight: 1866–1873: 6.22 grams; 1875–1891: 6.25 grams. Composition: .900 silver, .100 copper. Diameter: 24.3 mm. Edge: Reeded. Mints: Philadelphia, San Francisco, Carson City.
Key to Collecting: Although quarter dollars of this era are significantly scarcer than dimes and half dollars, enough exist that there will be no problem finding a choice example for a type set. Quite similar to the situation in the half dollar denomination, most of the higher-grade pieces are dated 1879 and later, which also coincides with a period of lower mintages. Circulated coins are scarce as a class and typically found of the higher-mintage dates (completely opposite the situation for Mint State coins!). Many Mint State examples exist but, interestingly, are from the lower-mintage issues from 1879 through 1891. Earlier dates, including some of very generous mintages, are much less often seen, particularly at the gem level. Many Mint State coins, particularly 1879 and later, are highly prooflike.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Generally good, but the details of Liberty, the stars, and the eagle should be checked.
Proof Coins: Proofs were made on a regular basis for collectors from 1866 onward. Today, they exist in proportion to the mintages. Some Proofs were rather carelessly struck, and although these are in the minority, it does pay to check for quality.
