Obverse Description
Lady liberty is seated on a rock bearing a shield with the word LIBERTY. 13 Stars frame the periphery with the date at the bottom middle under the rock.
Reverse Description
The heraldic eagle is centered in the design with the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and QUAR. DOL. around the periphery.

Designer: Christian Gobrecht. Weight: 1840–1853: 6.68 grams; 1856–1865: 6.22 grams. Composition: .900 silver, .100 copper. Diameter: 24.3 mm. Edge: Reeded. Mints: Philadelphia, New Orleans, San Francisco.
Key to Collecting: Liberty Seated quarters from this early span of years are much scarcer than are related half dimes, dimes, and half dollars, although this is not generally realized. However, enough are around that finding one will be no problem. Circulated coins in VF, EF, or AU are sufficiently available for type set purposes. Individual Mint State pieces range from scarce to rare, but the span of years is such that you will have no trouble finding one.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: The quality of striking varies widely due to the range of years involved. In general, check the features of Liberty on the obverse, including her hair details, and examine the stars around the borders. On the reverse, check the eagle, particularly the area to the lower left of the shield. The denticles are usually sharp, especially for earlier and later years but should be checked as well.
Proof Coins: Proofs were first produced in significant numbers beginning in 1858 and are thus available from that year through 1865 in proportion to their mintages. Truly choice and gem pieces without distracting hairlines are the minority and will require some searching.
