Obverse Description
Lady liberty is seated on a rock bearing a shield with the word LIBERTY. 13 Stars frame the periphery with the date at the bottom middle under the rock. Arrows appear to the left and right of the date.
Reverse Description
The heraldic eagle is centered in the design with the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and QUAR. DOL. around the periphery. A ribbon above the eagle's head bears the motto IN GOD WE TRUST
Book Reference
Designer: Christian Gobrecht, as modified by James B. Longacre, with the arrows added during the chief engravership of William Barber. Weight: 6.25 grams. Composition: .900 silver, .100 copper. Diameter: 24.3 mm. Edge: Reeded. Mints: Philadelphia, San Francisco, Carson City.
Key to Collecting: In 1873 the authorized weights of the silver dime, quarter, and half dollar were increased slightly to make them come out in more or less even figures in terms of the metric system. To signify this change, arrows were placed at the date of later 1873 quarters and all quarters dated 1874. Although the slightly higher weight remained the standard, the arrows were discontinued after 1874. Mint State coins are rare, as the mintage was much smaller than preceding and later (especially) without arrows coins. Today, choice Mint State coins are not often seen, and gems are very rare, the quarters of this type being much more difficult to locate than are dimes and half dollars of the same design. Circulated coins are available, often dated 1873 (the highest mintage).
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Most are well struck, but there are exceptions. The details on Liberty’s head are sometimes weak. Also check the star centers and the lower parts of the eagle.
Proof Coins: Probably 75% or more of the mintage of 1,240 pieces survives.
