Obverse Description
Lady liberty is seated on a rock bearing a shield with the word LIBERTY. 13 Stars frame the periphery with the date at the bottom middle under the rock. Arrows appear to the left and right of the date.
Reverse Description
The heraldic eagle is centered in the design with the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and QUAR. DOL. around the periphery. Rays (or raised lines) appear in the open spaces around the eagle fanning outward to the lettering.

Designer: Christian Gobrecht, as slightly modified by James B. Longacre or someone else on the Mint sta!. Weight: 6.22 grams. Composition: .900 silver, .100 copper. Diameter: 24.3 mm. Edge: Reeded. Mints: Philadelphia, New Orleans.
Key to Collecting: Quarter dollars of this one-year type with arrows on the obverse and rays on the reverse were produced in large quantities, primarily at the Philadelphia Mint, plus some of 1853-O. Although examples are quite numerous on the market today, most were struck in haste, and quality suffered. Accordingly, at any given grade range, it is important to select a sharp example, such coins being in the minority. Even most Mint State pieces have lightness of strike or grainy or otherwise lifeless luster. Cherrypicking is advised.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Quality of striking played second fiddle to high-speed production for this issue, and from the viewpoint of a connoisseur, most examples today have problems of one sort or another. Check the details of Liberty, including her head, and the stars. Many of these were struck from “tired” dies, giving a grainy aspect to them, quite lifeless, even on choice and gem pieces. On the reverse, the striking is usually better than the obverse, but check the details of the eagle, especially at the lower left.
Proof Coins: Proofs are exceedingly rare. Sometimes prooflike circulation strikes have been offered as Proofs. Be careful.
