Obverse Description
Lady liberty is seated on a rock bearing a shield with the word LIBERTY. 13 Stars frame the periphery with the date at the bottom middle under the rock. Arrows appear to the left and right of the date.
Reverse Description
The heraldic eagle is centered in the design with the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and QUAR. DOL. around the periphery.
Book Reference
Designer: Christian Gobrecht, with the arrows added by someone on Mint staff. Weight: 6.22 grams. Composition: .900 silver, .100 copper. Diameter: 24.3 mm. Edge: Reeded. Mints: Philadelphia, New Orleans, San Francisco.
Key to Collecting: Today, examples are available in just about every grade desired, except that Mint State pieces are somewhat scarce. Many are quite attractive—significantly more so than the typical example of the preceding type. Select one with deep frosty luster and sharp striking. Mint State coins in all numerical categories are scarcer than those of 1853, but when found, they tend to be of better eye appeal.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: The usual areas should be checked, including the details of Liberty, the stars, and the eagle, but in general, the striking is better than on the preceding.
Proof Coins: Proof coins were made in small quantities and sometimes come on the market today. These are extremely rare and highly desirable. Most have very nice eye appeal.
