Obverse Description

Christian Gobrecht's portrait of Liberty is surrounded by 13 stars with the date centered at the bottom.

Reverse Description

Heraldic eagle holding arrows and branch in its claws is centered in the design with the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA * FIVE D. around the periphery. Mintmark (if any) is located under the eagle's claws.

Book Reference

Designer: Christian Gobrecht. Weight: 8.359 grams. Composition: .900 gold, .100 copper (net weight .24187 oz. pure gold). Diameter: 21.6 mm. Edge: Reeded. Mints: Philadelphia, Charlotte, Dahlonega, Denver, New Orleans, San Francisco, Carson City.

Key to Collecting: With this half eagle type, you are home free, as there are pieces available in the marketplace in just about any grade you desire, from VF to gem Mint State. As the difference between low-grade Mint State and circulated coins is not great, a Mint State coin of one level or another is recommended. Examples abound, and you will have no difficulty finding a choice or gem piece.

Aspects of Striking and Appearance: The sharpness is generally much better than on the earlier type, but still the same points should be checked. The first places to look are at the lower area of the eagle on the reverse as well as areas around the shield on the eagle’s breast. If these features are sharp, then check the obverse details.

Proof Coins: Proofs exist in relation to their mintage figures. Those of 1902 have polished portraits, rather than cameo or frosted, and issues of 1903 to 1907 are generally not as attractive as are the earlier dates. Choose carefully, with quality in mind.
