The year was 1849 and along with the gold rush came brand new currency to America in the Gold Dollar and the Double Eagle, which both shared the same Liberty obverse. Since there was so much gold to be had and these Gold Dollars were so small, as compared to many previous gold issues, their mintages were relatively high. All five mints at the time produced the Liberty Gold Dollar from 1849 to 1854. Most Liberty Gold Dollars were struck in Philadelphia making a type or date set easy to complete but the same cannot be said for a full date and mintmark collection. C and D minted issues got their gold locally with no assistance from the California gold rush or the ?mother-mint? in Philly. That has caused any early Gold Dollars from Charlotte or Dahlonega to become elusive rarities in today's market. Collectors normally look for high grade pieces but they are certainly interested in any fully original rarity from the branch mints. This design was short lived because of its small size which drew much negativity from 1850?s America.

"1 DOLLAR" is centered with date below, surrounded by a wreath tied in a bow at the bottom. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the periphery. Mint mark, if any, appears at the bottom below the bow.

Key to Collecting: A representative example can be obtained with ease in just about any grade desired from VF upward. Coins of the first year, 1849 “Small Head,” not often collected as a separate type, are frequently seen in Mint State, probably because they were saved as souvenirs or curiosities but are not inexpensive. These combine the first year of issue together with the distinctive Small Head portrait, flat or plain fields, and open wreath. Generally, Mint State examples are quite choice with superb eye appeal and are well struck. Mint State examples of the Large Head gold dollars from 1849 through 1854 are most available for the higher-mintage dates of the early 1850’s. Later in the series, the high-mintage issues of 1851, 1852, and 1853 offer possibilities. It is always interesting to add flavor to a type set, and you may wish to consider a Charlotte, Dahlonega, or New Orleans gold dollar.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: The quality varies from issue to issue. Points to check include the high parts of Liberty’s hair, the wreath details, the date numerals, and the denticles. Also the fields of the coin should be checked to be sure they are not grainy or wavy. Some connoisseurship is needed.
Proof Coins: Although a few Proofs were coined in the early years, they are for all practical purposes unobtainable. Only about a dozen are known.16
