The unprecedented crossover underscores his personal efforts to combat “grade inflation.”

Key to Collecting: Most pieces of this type are dated 1795, although the 1794 is not in the class of great rarities. The design is attractive, and a carefully selected VF or EF piece can be a pleasure to own. Probably 3,500 to 6,000 circulated coins exist. Typical grades are G to F or so. EF and AU grades are elusive in regard to the total population.
Mint State coins are rare. Probably about 100 coins exist at this level, the vast preponderance being of the 1795 date, with just three or four legitimate Mint State 1794’s in the picture.14 Nearly all are in lower Mint State grades. In addition, some AU coins have “graduated” to be called Mint State. However, in relation to the great demand for these pieces, they are quite difficult to obtain, and the appearance of a choice one is an important numismatic event. Finding a really choice example—a decent strike and without adjustment marks or areas of weakness—is a great challenge for this issue. Connoisseurship will pay its rewards, while your competitors will likely be satisfied with ordinary pieces.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Many have problems of one sort or another, often severe, including adjustment marks from filing the planchet, and/or light striking in some areas, most particularly the breast of the eagle. Some have mushy, indistinct, or defective rims. Much more so than for the lower-denomination half dime or the higher-denomination silver dollar, a really nice Flowing Hair half dollar is hard to find. It may not be possible to find a needle-sharp example, but with some extensive searching a fairly decent strike can be obtained. In summary, a sharply struck coin is a goal, not necessarily a reality.
