The unprecedented crossover underscores his personal efforts to combat “grade inflation.”
Obverse Description
Bold portrait of Dwight D. Eisenhower, facing left, with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST in front of the President's neck. The word LIBERTY is centered on the top periphery and the date at the bottom. Mint mark, if any, is positioned just below the bust.
Reverse Description
A flying eagle, clutching olive branches, appears to be landing on the cratered moon, with the earth seen in the background. 13 stars surround the design with the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and ONE DOLLAR framing the periphery.
Book Reference
Designer: Frank Gasparro. Weight: 22.68 grams. Composition: Outer layers of .750 copper, .250 nickel bonded to inner core of pure copper. Diameter: 38.1 mm. Edge: Reeded. Mints: Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco.
Key to Collecting: Coins of the Eisenhower type were made from 1971 through 1978, except that none were dated 1975 (the Mint was busy pre-striking coins that year for the Bicentennial). Circulation strikes were produced for use in casinos and elsewhere, while silver pieces were sold at a premium to numismatists. In the present text, I have included the silver coins as a separate type, but you may opt to just get one Eisenhower dollar. In any event, such coins are not expensive. Circulated coins are abundant but not of consideration for you as Mint State pieces abound, although many show extensive bagmarks, this being particularly true for the earlier dates.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Generally good, but check the high parts of the portrait on the obverse and, on the reverse, the details of the eagle.
Proof Coins: In the copper-nickel metal, Proofs were made at the San Francisco Mint beginning in 1973. Quantities ran into the millions, and pieces are easily obtained today.
