Book Reference

Designer: Robert Scot. Weight: 5.44 grams. Composition: Copper. Diameter: 23.5 mm. Edge: Plain. Mint: Philadelphia.

Key to Collecting: The Draped Bust half cent is readily available in most any desired grade, up through and including Mint State, the latter being somewhat elusive in proportion to the demand for them. Mint State examples from old-time hoards are sometimes available of 1800 and 1806, especially the latter date. High-quality circulation-s trike examples are readily available in grades such as VF, EF, and AU. The most obtainable dates are 1800, 1803 (less so), 1804, 1805, and 1806. 1802, 2 Over 0, is a rarity. 1807 and 1808 are often with porous surfaces. These are usually highly lustrous, attractive, and have original mint orange blended with natural light-brown toning. The reverses typically have areas of light striking, particularly on the upper leaves.

Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Generally struck on high-quality planchets (for 1800, 1803 to 1806 dates). Planchets for the rare 1802, 2 Over 0, are apt to be rough. Detail varies, but sharp pieces are available. Points of observation include hair and leaf features.
