The unprecedented crossover underscores his personal efforts to combat “grade inflation.”

Key to Collecting: Inaugurated in 1795, the Draped Bust silver dollar type with Small Eagle reverse represents the first appearance of this popular obverse portrait—a depiction of Liberty that later extended to other silver denominations as well as copper half cents and cents. The visage was said to have been by Gilbert Stuart, well known for his unfinished portrait of George Washington, a familiar decoration on schoolroom walls. Silver dollars of this motif were produced through early 1798. An example for type set purposes is easily enough found, but is somewhat on the scarce side. Typical grades are VF and EF. AU coins are rare, and Mint State pieces are especially so. When seen they are often dated 1795, the first year, and can be quite attractive. Some of the 1795 coins have prooflike surfaces. True Mint State examples, particularly in the choice and gem categories, are scarcely ever seen of 1796, 1797, or 1798.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Striking is usually fairly decent, unless you take out a magnifying glass and check certain details. Look over the star centers, hair details of Liberty, eagle details on the reverse, and the denticles. While perfection may be more of a goal than a reality, there are some nice coins out there, even if every little detail is not needle-sharp. Many have Mint-caused planchet adjustment marks, most noticeable at the centers and/or near the rims.
