Obverse Description
Liberty is portrayed with a so-called "draped bust," facing right, with her hair tied back with a ribbon. She is flanked by stars on the left and right periphery with the word LIBERTY on top, and the date positioned at the bottom.
Reverse Description
The centerpiece of the reverse is the so-called "heraldic eagle" with wings fully spread and emblazoned with a shield replacing the chest. A ribbon bearing the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM hangs from the beak. The eagle's right talon holds bundle of arrows and an olive branch in the right. Above the eagle's head are a group of stars and clouds with the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA at the periphery.

Key to Collecting: Many exist in circulated grades, and most often seen are the dates 1798 and 1799. At least a couple hundred or so different examples have been described as Mint State over the years. Some of these represent wishful thinking more than anything else. Still, select examples do exist. If you are contemplating the purchase of one, pick a coin that is lightly toned and shows generous amounts of mint luster.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Relatively few pieces are sharply struck in all areas. Places to check include on the obverse the hair details of Liberty, the star centers, and the denticles. On the reverse, the eagle details, the upper right area of the shield, the stars above the eagle (often a few are weak), and the clouds are points of observation. It will repay you to go slowly on this one.
Proof Coins: Proof “restrikes” from new dies, backdated 1801, 1802, and 1803, were made at the Mint in the third quarter of the 19th century.
