All Draped Bust, large-eagle reverse quarters are scarce. The key date in this short series is the 1804, with a mintage of just 6,738 coins with an fewer than 400 survivors estimated. The 1805, 1806, and 1807 Draped Bust quarters have mintages in the low six figures, but today only a couple thousand or so of each exist. Variety enthusiasts refer to the Browning (B#) reference.
Obverse Description
Liberty is portrayed with a so-called "draped bust," facing right, with her hair tied back with a ribbon. She is flanked by stars on the left and right periphery with the word LIBERTY on top, and the date positioned at the bottom.
Reverse Description
The centerpiece of the reverse is the so-called "heraldic eagle" with wings fully spread and emblazoned with a shield replacing the chest. A ribbon bearing the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM hangs from the beak. The eagles right talon holds bundle of arrows and an olive branch in the right. Above the eagle's head are a group of stars and clouds with the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA at the top periphery. The denomination of 25 C. appears at the bottom.

Key to Collecting: Quarter dollars of the several dates combining the Draped Bust obverse with Heraldic Eagle reverse were made in sufficient quantities that none is a rarity today, although the 1804 is considered to be scarcer than the others. Examples of the dates 1805 to 1807 abound in the marketplace, generally in circulated grades, and nearly always with weak striking, this being particularly true of the last year, 1807. Get ready, get set, go! A challenge awaits you!
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: The majority of coins of this type have problems. Check the striking details on the portrait and on the eagle, the border stars and letters, and the denticles. Finding a sharply struck coin will test your patience, but when the game is caught and in your hand you’ll be very proud. Meanwhile, most of your competitors in the marketplace will be concentrating on grading numbers, not quality, giving you a great advantage. For my money, I would rather own a sharply struck AU than a flatly struck MS-63! Mint State coins are virtually impossible to find for 1804, but are occasionally seen for the years 1805 to 1807. Luster is often good, but striking is apt to be miserable, and therefore cherrypicking is required. This will be a special challenge. A sharply struck coin is a goal, not necessarily a reality. As if these challenges are not sufficient, many have Mint-caused planchet-adjustment marks.
