Key to Collecting: The Draped Bust cent made its debut in 1796, following a coinage of Liberty Cap cents the same year. The motif, from a drawing by Gilbert Stuart, was first employed on certain silver dollars of 1795. The new design proved to be very durable and was used through and including 1807. While the 1799 is a classic rarity and the 1804 is elusive, enough exist of most other dates that finding a choice one will be no problem. Plentiful in all lower grades, but most range from G to F. Mint State coins, however, are very scarce, and are generally in lower grades, MS-60 to MS-63, with brown surfaces.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Often lightly struck in some areas of the denticles. Also check for hair-strand detail and leaf detail on higher-grade specimens. Planchet quality is generally good, but many rough and porous pieces exist. Careful selection is recommended.
