Obverse Description
Liberty is portrayed with a so-called "draped bust," facing right, with her hair tied back with a ribbon. She is flanked by stars on the left and right periphery with the word LIBERTY on top, and the date positioned at the bottom.
Reverse Description
The centerpiece of the reverse is the so-called "heraldic eagle" with wings fully spread and emblazoned with a shield replacing the chest. A ribbon bearing the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM hangs from the beak. The eagles right talon holds bundle of arrows and an olive branch in the right. Above the eagle's head are a group of stars and clouds with the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA at the top periphery. No denomination is mentioned.

Key to Collecting: Half dollars of this type increase in their general availability from the earlier years, 1801 (rare) and 1802 (very scarce), to 1807, those of 1806 and 1807 being most often seen. Circulated examples abound in various grades, with VF being typical. Although examples are available in just about any grade desired through low Mint State (MS-60 to MS-62), striking details are often weak, and a good amount of enjoyable scouting is needed! Of course, if you don’t care, you can buy one in an instant. However, if you are particular, as I hope you will be, this “common” type may take you a long time to acquire. Across much of American numismatics, what used to be AU a generation ago has “graduated” to Mint State, giving great impetus to the resubmission process through the grading services. Choice and gem pieces are rare, and if sharply struck are exceedingly rare.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Most show areas of light striking. The most obvious points are the stars on the obverse, the stars above the eagle on the reverse, and also on the reverse the clouds, the details of the shield, and the eagle’s wings. However, all areas of the coin should be checked, including the denticles. For half dollars of this type, there is no known instance in which pieces were carefully struck either for presentation to dignitaries or for sale to collectors. Such pieces were made on a hand-powered press and struck in a manner to produce as many pieces as quickly as possible. Many have Mintcaused planchet-adjustment marks, a major problem with all early halves through and including this type. In summary, a sharply struck coin is a goal, not necessarily a reality.
