Obverse Description
Liberty is portrayed, facing left, with cap on her head and the word LIBERTY on her crown. 7 and 6 stars on the left and right periphery, respectively with the date positioned in the bottom center.
Reverse Description
An eagle is centered in the design with a shield over its chest, holding arrows and olive branches in its talons. A ribbon above bears the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the periphery. The denomination listed as "5C." appears at the bottom.

Engraver: William Kneass, after a design by John Reich. Weight: 1.35 grams (changed to 1.34 grams in 1837). Composition:.8924 silver, .1076 copper (changed to .900 silver, .100 copper in 1837). Diameter: Approximately 15.5 mm. Edge: Reeded. Mint: Philadelphia.
Key to Collecting: Half dimes of this design were first struck in the wee small hours of the morning of July 4, 1829, to have a supply on hand for insertion in the cornerstone of the new (second) Philadelphia Mint building and, presumably, to have some inexpensive coins on hand for distribution as souvenirs. There are no rare dates in this range, but some die varieties are elusive. Finding a nice example for your type set will be no problem. Examples abound in all grades. As these are not expensive, you will want to consider a higher level, say at least VF. There are many Mint State coins on the market.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Most half dimes of this type are fairly well struck. Points to check include the hair details and star centers on the obverse and the eagle on the reverse. Denticles range from well defined to somewhat indistinct, and, in general, are sharper on the obverse than on the reverse.
Proof Coins: Proof coins were struck in limited numbers for presentation purposes and for distribution to numismatists. Insist on a coin with deep and full (not partial) mirror surfaces. Seek one that is well struck and has good contrast. Avoid deeply toned pieces (deep toning often masks the true nature of a coin).
