Capped Bust dimes, designed by John Reich, are generally more common than the Draped Bust issues. However, like their earlier counterparts they are challenging to locate in the better Mint States grades. The 1822 and 1829 Curl Base 2 are the rarest issues, with both regularly trading in the four-figure range.
Obverse Description
Liberty is portrayed, facing left, with cap on her head and the word LIBERTY on her crown. 7 and 6 stars on the left and right periphery, respectively with the date positioned in the bottom center.
Reverse Description
An eagle is centered in the design with a shield over its chest, holding arrows and olive branches in its talons. A ribbon above bears the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the periphery. The denomination listed as "10 C." appears at the bottom.

Key to Collecting: Circulated coins are widely available for the higher mintage dates in grades from G to F. Mint State coins are fairly scarce, even in the range of MS-60 to MS-63. Choice and gem pieces are rare, and sharply struck examples are especially so. Most pieces are attractive, especially in higher grades. Striking varies (details are given below), but with some searching, a nice example can be located, an enjoyable pursuit. The dies were made by hand, as were earlier dies in the series. Accordingly, careful viewing under low power magnification will reward you with interesting details.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Places to check for light striking on the obverse include the center of the portrait and around the brooch, the star centers, and the denticles. On the reverse check the eagle, especially the area in and around the upper right of the shield. Denticles are sometimes weak, but are usually better refined on the reverse than on the obverse.
Proof Coins: Proof coins were struck in limited numbers for presentation purposes and for distribution to numismatists. Insist on a coin with deep and full (not partial) mirror surfaces. Search for one that is well struck, and has good contrast. Avoid deeply toned pieces (deep toning often masks the true nature of a coin). More than just a few pieces attributed as “Proofs” are not Proofs, in my opinion. Be careful.
