The unprecedented crossover underscores his personal efforts to combat “grade inflation.”
The Kagin-15 is the only collectible beaded border half eagle variety. It was struck from the same dies as the Kagin-14 after the weight “150.G.” was added to the obverse. Although this variety was probably issued by Bechtler for around two years, today there are only around 20 known examples. Of these, fewer than 15 exist in the public domain, and locating a well-struck, original coin is a real challenge. Most Kagin-15 $5s grade AU, with a handful of pieces called mint state by the grading services. The finest known example is the choice BU Frossard/Ellsworth/Garrett specimen.
