In 2021, the U.S. Mint began minting and issuing quarters with a reverse design depicting General George Washington crossing the Delaware River prior to the Battle of Trenton during the American Revolutionary War. On December 25, 1776, General George Washington, along with 2,400 troops and artillery, began his historic crossing of the Delaware River in preparation for a surprise attack on British and Hessian soldiers.

Obverse Description

Houdin's portrait of Washington, facing left, as imagined by John Flanagan. LIBERTY at the top periphery and the date centered at the bottom with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST left of Washington's neck. The mint mark appears to the right of the president's hair ribbon.

Reverse Description

General Washington is depicted in his uniform pointing his sword with the scene of his famous Delaware River crossing in the background. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, QUARTER DOLLAR appear on the periphery with the words CROSSING THE DELAWARE in the field.

Key to Collecting: The one-year design known as Washington Crossing the Delaware had its origins in the America’s Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act of 2008. The law specified that, after the five-designs-per-year America the Beautiful program ended in 2021, “The reverse of the quarter dollar shall contain an image of General Washington crossing the Delaware River prior to the Battle of Trenton.” The obverse would revert to the pre–State quarters version of Washington used through 1998.

When 2021 arrived, only one National Parks quarter remained to be issued: the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site. The Crossing the Delaware design bridged the gap between it and the new program commencing in 2022: the American Women Quarters. For a type set, a very nice Crossing the Delaware quarter can be found at face value, and of course a coin dealer will have splendid gems in stock.
