The unprecedented crossover underscores his personal efforts to combat “grade inflation.”
Discovery made by CACG in July 2024.
Large die gouge in the lower right shield passing under the vertical stripes. Lower border of gouge is recessed from metal raised up on die. A second, lighter gouge can be seen between the NE in ONE.
Easily seen with no magnification, this is already an exciting die defect for a modern coin. The fact that it was discovered in a sealed Monster Box of coins struck in San Francisco means that the die gouge is additionally a de facto mint mark, making this variety the only bullion ASE that can be attributed to a branch mint by looking only at the coin.
Obverse Description
The obverse design features a refreshed depiction of Adolph A. Weinman’s full-length figure of Liberty in full stride, enveloped in folds of the flag, with her right hand extended and branches of laurel and oak in her left.
Reverse Description
The reverse design features a stylized heraldic eagle design by John Mercanti.
