The proof Kennedy half dollar set is affordable and popular. While all issues are relatively common, the early dates with deep cameo surfaces are quite scarce and desirable by more advanced collectors.
Obverse Description
Portrait of President John F. Kennedy surrounded by the word LIBERTY on the periphery. IN GOD WE TRUST appears left and right of the portrait with the date at the bottom. The mint mark appears under the right of Kennedy's neck.
Reverse Description
The heraldic eagle holding arrows and branch of olive leaves with a full circle of stars around it. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA * HALF DOLLAR surround the periphery.
Book Reference
Designers: Obverse: Gilroy Roberts; Reverse: Seth Huntington. Weight: 11.5 grams. Composition: Outer layers of .800 silver, .200 copper bonded to inner core of .209 silver, .791 copper (net weight .14792 oz. pure silver). Diameter: 30.6 mm. Edge: Reeded. Mints: Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco.
Key to Collecting: This type is similar to the preceding Bicentennial issue, except that it is struck on a 40% silver planchet. Mint State pieces were made at Philadelphia, Proofs at San Francisco. Circulated coins are rare, as these were not placed into circulation and not relevant to building a type set. Mint State coins are very common.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Usually well struck.
