The S mintmark is larger than normal. This scarce die variety is one of the keys among Philippine coins struck under American sovereignty. It was one of the first Philippine die varieties to be included in the Guide Book of United States Coins. Lyman Allen opined that an S punch intended for fifty-centavos coinage was used on a centavo die, resulting in the larger than normal mintmark.
