The 1902 V Nickel is the highest mintage so far in the series with over 31 million coins struck. It is very common from circulated grades up to and including MS66 with just the finest of gems as scarce. The perfect type coin as it is affordable. It is important to be aware, however, of striking issues as most are solid strikes but the existence of weakness in parts is quite common.
Obverse Description
Lady Liberty with the word LIBERTY on her crown faces left with 13 stars around the periphery and the date positioned at the bottom center.
Reverse Description
Large V (roman numeral 5) is centered in the design surrounded by an ornate wreath with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA * CENTS * around the periphery. The motto E PLURIBUS UNUM appears near the top between the wreath and letters STATES OF AME.

Key to Collecting: The 1902 Liberty Head nickel is most often seen well worn. This is also true of other dates of the era. Mint State coins are plentiful, but Full Details can be quite elusive. At present, most buyers do not pay attention to quality, so you have a distinct advantage if you use your knowledge. Proofs are scarce, but are usually attractive when found.
CIRCULATION STRIKES:
Characteristics and Appearance: Striking of details ranges from sharp to poor. Some are from tired dies. Many planchets are rough or otherwise subpar. A total of 114 obverse dies were used.
PROOF STRIKES:
Characteristics and Appearance: The portrait is in low contrast, reflecting changes at the Mint, which had just recently moved into a new building. The obverse die is deeply basined. At this point, “cameo” pieces were no longer available, a situation that would last for several years. Regardless of this fact, collectors and dealers continue to label coins as cameo contrast in order to boost sales to uninformed buyers, or perhaps because the graders do not examine the coins carefully.
