Book Reference

Key to Collecting: The 1900-S dollar is readily available in Mint State, although it is hardly a common date. Most are very lustrous. Actual striking sharpness ranges from flat to quite good, but perceived sharpness is affected on this and many other dollars from now through 1904, from the use of the new hub with lightly defined breast feathers.

Surface Quality: The strike varies from weak to sharp, with most being above average. The element of new hub use now needs to be factored into evaluating die sharpness versus striking sharpness, this general rule holding for coins of the next several years from the three mints. The luster is usually frosty and rich.

Prooflike Coins: Prooflike pieces are occasionally seen and have low contrast.

Mintage and Distribution: Delivery figures by month: January–February, 0; March, 500,000; April–August, 0; September, 1,000,000; October, 1,000,000; November, 0; December, 1,040,000. Following the by-now-familiar routine, many dollars of this issue were stored at the San Francisco Mint. Beginning in a significant way in the 1930’s, many bags were paid out, continuing to the 1950’s. While thousands went into numismatic hands, more were circulated in commerce and in casinos. However, many bags remained and were paid out during the great Treasury release of 1962 through 1964.

VARIETIES:

Many varieties exist, mostly of the old hub, but at least one with new hub (introduced in 1900) over old hub, and with some slight features of the undertype visible. There were 35 die pairs made. Among the varieties, VAM-3A is particularly interesting and shows a wide, small mintmark boldly overpunched with a tall, narrow mintmark. This reverse die with the small mintmark was used for coinage, and many were struck from it. That small mintmark has slight repunching. Then the small mintmark, repunched as noted, was overpunched by a tall, narrow S mintmark, for additional coinage, perhaps not as many as before the larger mintmark was overpunched. Somehow, The Top 100 Morgan Dollar Varieties: The VAM Keys missed this.
