Due to the discovery of bag quantities in the mid 20th century, the 1899-O Morgan dollar is one of several issues in the series where uncirculated specimens are about as common as circulated pieces. In this case, the 1899-O Morgan dollar is readily available through MS65, with MS66s scarce, MS67s extremely scarce, and MS68s exceedingly rare. PLs and DMPLs are scarce in all grades, transitioning to rare in the Gem levels.
Obverse Description

Reverse Description
The heraldic eagle is centered holding a bunch of arrows and branch surrounded by and olive leaves. The words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA * ONE DOLLAR frame the periphery. Mint mark, if any, appears above the letters DO of DOLLAR.

Key to Collecting: The 1899-O was another star in the great Treasury release of autumn 1962, but not of the fame of the 1898-O, 1903-O, and 1904-O, those three being acknowledged as rarities before the deluge. Although the striking quality varies, sharp pieces can be found without much problem among the large numbers on the market. The usual 1899-O is sparkling and beautiful to behold.
Surface Quality: Striking varies from below average to sharp, but is generally above average. Still, discrimination is advised when buying a specimen. Most 1899-O dollars are lustrous and attractive.
Prooflike Coins: Prooflike coins are scarce. DMPLs with cameo contrast can be of stunning beauty in high grades.
Mintage and Distribution: Delivery figures by month: January, 1,200,000; February, 1,100,000; March, 1,350,000; April, 1,350,000; May, 1,500,000; June, 700,000; July, 360,000; August, 830,000; September, 870,000; October, 1,000,000; November, 950,000; December, 1,080,000. In Mint State the 1899-O was elusive in early years. In 1947 and 1948, and continuing into the early 1950’s, a few bags emerged from hiding in the Treasury Building in Washington, D.C., and were shipped to banks, although thousands went to collectors and dealers. In November 1962 a Niagara of 1899-O dollars cascaded from the famous long-sealed (since 1929) vault in the Philadelphia Mint. Today, Mint State coins are abundant.
VARIETIES:
There are many die varieties of this year from 85 pairs prepared, most with medium O mintmark, with some exceptions.
1899-O, Micro O Mintmark—VAM-4, 5, and 6. Small mintmark. Elusive; although some Mint State coins exist, they sell for a sharp premium if identified. MS-65 coins have sold for more than $20,000.
