The unprecedented crossover underscores his personal efforts to combat “grade inflation.”
This date sees a drop in mintage from its most recent massive mintage predecessor, down to approximately 12.5 million. Slightly scarcer because of this fact, making high grade gems really tough to find. Just be aware of striking issues with the 1898 as most are solid strikes; but, some weaker pieces can get in the way of collectors.
Obverse Description
Lady Liberty with the word LIBERTY on her crown faces left with 13 stars around the periphery and the date positioned at the bottom center.
Reverse Description
Large V (roman numeral 5) is centered in the design surrounded by an ornate wreath with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA * CENTS * around the periphery. The motto E PLURIBUS UNUM appears near the top between the wreath and letters STATES OF AME.
Book Reference
Key to Collecting: Probably no more than one in four Mint State coins combines decent sharpness with rich luster. Happily, the supply of 1898 nickels is sufficiently large that a nice one can be found in due course. Proofs are rather scarce and are usually less than PF-65 in numerical rating. When found, examples are apt to be choice. I reiterate that population data are of limited use as coins thought to be below MS-63 or 64 are not often submitted, due to the high cost of grading compared to the market value of the pieces.
CIRCULATION STRIKES:
Characteristics and Appearance: Striking varies in sharpness, and luster varies as well. This date is fairly plentiful, and a choice example can be found. A total of 91 obverse dies were made.
This seems to be the last year that the Treasury Department cleaned and reissued large quantities of worn nickels of earlier dates.
PROOF STRIKES:
Characteristics and Appearance: Usually well struck and of nice appearance.
Mintage and Distribution Notes: Breen describes three obverse dies, one with slightly repunched date, another with final 8 especially bold (probably from the uneven punching of the four-digit logotype into the working die).
