The unprecedented crossover underscores his personal efforts to combat “grade inflation.”

Book Reference
Key to Collecting: Here we are, back again to a really top-notch dollar in terms of availability, strike, luster, and all else good. The 1897-S is usually all of these, and adding one to your collection can be done on just about any budget. The entire situation of 1897-S is reminiscent of the memorable-quality, but inexpensive, S Mint coins of the early years of the series.
Surface Quality: Usually seen well struck, decent strikes being the rule, not the exception, for San Francisco coins of this era—in contrast to those of New Orleans. Usually lustrous and attractive.
Prooflike Coins: Prooflike coins are fairly plentiful, but are often lightly struck and with little eye appeal. However, sharp and attractive coins can be found here and there.
Mintage and Distribution: Delivery figures by month: January, 800,000; February, 800,000; March, 800,000; April, 800,000; May, 800,000; June, 475,000; July–September, 0; October, 300,000; November, 600,000; December, 450,000. It’s the same old story, San Francisco procedures redux. Many were stored at the Mint and were kept there for decades (although notice must be taken that the Mint “moved”—i.e., that things were relocated to a modern building in 1937). In the 1950’s and 1960’s the Mint was a great source for “cartwheels,” as some called dollars, for the gaming tables of Nevada, by which time old-line Reno had yielded its laurels as a tourist destination to Las Vegas, what with the glittering Strip lined with casinos. Many dollars also went to coin dealers and investors (a nod to LaVere Redfield and those of like mind), providing the source for those that numismatists enjoy today.
VARIETIES:
Minor varieties of date and mintmark positions from 38 die pairs made (but not all necessarily used).
