The 1890-O Morgan dollar is a very common coin in all circulated grades and in MS levels through MS64, though above that this piece becomes exceptionally tough. It is rare in MS66 or better, with decent bidding wars often waged between registry set collectors who want the best pieces for their collections. PLs and DMPLs are scarce in all grades and rare in the Gem levels.
Obverse Description

Reverse Description
The heraldic eagle is centered holding a bunch of arrows and branch surrounded by and olive leaves. The words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA * ONE DOLLAR frame the periphery. Mint mark, if any, appears above the letters DO of DOLLAR.

Key to Collecting: The 1890-O is plentiful enough in Mint State, “raw” and also in “slabs,” but the majority are lightly struck in one area or another. Some were struck from dies that should have been put out to pasture or sent to the glue factory, and flow lines and granularity tell the tale today. However, enough sharp pieces exist that getting one will be no problem. MS-65 coins are much more elusive than are MS-64s.
Surface Quality: The typical 1890-O shows areas of light striking in the center. A few sharp pieces exist but require searching. As always, certification services do not make a distinction, thereby giving you an advantage. The luster is usually attractive and rich on the 1890-O.
Prooflike Coins: Some dies are prooflike and can be attractive in higher grades. However, among prooflike coins, striking is often soft. Some selected DMPL coins are gorgeous to behold.
Mintage and Distribution: Delivery figures by month: January, 1,000,000; February, 1,000,000; March, 1,000,000; April, 1,000,000; May, 750,000; June, 700,000; July, 700,000; August, 740,000; September, 850,000; October, 1,000,000; November, 1,000,000; December, 961,000. While many were paid out in earlier times, including in 1953 and 1954, an estimated 500,000 or more, possibly many more, were stored in the Philadelphia Mint and were included in the releases of 1962 through 1964.
VARIETIES:
There are numerous varieties involving repunched dates, mintmark placement, etc. VAM-10 has two diagonal ridges extending from the denticles right of the date, one ridge piercing the last number of the date, the result of die gouges. VAM-2 can be found with the reverse die misaligned 20° to 60° from normal.
