The unprecedented crossover underscores his personal efforts to combat “grade inflation.”

Book Reference
Key to Collecting: There are not many Morgan dollars with a total mintage of less than a million, and this is one of them. Examples are desirable in all grades, but enough exist in Mint State that serious collectors can be satisfied easily.
Surface Quality: Usually seen fairly well struck. Typically encountered with excellent luster.
Prooflike Coins: Many have prooflike surfaces. DMPL specimens usually have good contrast.
Mintage and Distribution: Delivery figures by month: January–October, 0; November, 200,000; December, 500,000. In 1889 most of these dollars seem to have been moved only within the walls of the San Francisco Mint, into a storage vault. In 1937 a few bags were paid out, then many bags in the 1940’s, after which the 1889-S was regarded as common. In the 1950’s, bags could be obtained for face value at the Mint, but there was not a strong demand for them. Probably, many were sent to casinos. All told, perhaps 50,000 to 100,000 were preserved by collectors and investors.
VARIETIES:
From the five die pairs made for this coinage, there are no varieties exciting enough to write home about, but the specialist will find several to be of at least passing interest. VAM-2 has the S mintmark tilted notably to the left. VAM-4 and VAM-7 have slightly doubled mintmarks.
