The 1888-S Morgan dollar is a popular and scarce piece that is relatively available in the circulated grades. However, it is perhaps more numerous in uncirculated grades as most of the ones on the market today came to light in the mid 20th century with the release of bags by the U.S. Treasury. PLs and DMPLs are extraordinarily scarce, especially in the Gem range, where these pieces are downright rare.

Obverse Description

Portrait of Liberty centered. On the left are found 7 stars with the words E*PLURIBUS*UNUM followed by 6 stars on the right. The date is positioned at the bottom.

Reverse Description

The heraldic eagle is centered holding a bunch of arrows and branch surrounded by and olive leaves. The words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA * ONE DOLLAR frame the periphery. Mint mark, if any, appears above the letters DO of DOLLAR.

Book Reference

Key to Collecting: The 1888-S is scarce in Mint State in the context of Morgan dollars, but enough exist that there is no diffculty tracking down an example in MS-63 or MS-64. While many if not most San Francisco Morgan dollars are sharply struck, the 1888-S is an exception.

Surface Quality: The strike varies from poor to sharp, with sharp pieces being in the minority. Careful cherrypicking is recommended. The luster of the 1888-S is usually attractive, although there are some exceptions.

Prooflike Coins: Prooflike coins, one-sided as well as two-sided, were plentiful a couple decades ago, but are widely scattered now. These can be very attractive. The Redfield hoard yielded some marvelous DMPL examples.

Mintage and Distribution: Delivery figures by month: January–March, 0; April, 160,000; May, 150,000; June, 239,000; July, 28,000; August, 10,000; September, 70,000; October–December, 0. The 1888-S was distributed in a manner similar to 1887-S. Examples were scarce on the numismatic market in early times, but in 1942 large quantities were released from storage in the San Francisco Mint. From then onward, they were a drag on the market, and as they kept coming out, many if not most were sent to Nevada casinos and elsewhere, to be used in commerce. After the 1950’s, quantities became scarce, and in time the issue became valuable. Relatively few were left by the time of the 1962 through 1964 Treasury release. The Redfield hoard is said to have had 5,000 to 10,000 coins, including thousands of prooflike examples.

VARIETIES:

VAM-2 and 6 show repunching of the S mintmark, mainly as a filling of the interior openings.
