The 1887/6-O overdate occurred when some 1886 dies for the Morgan dollar were retooled and punched with a 7, thus creating this overdate. A popular variety, the 1887/6-O Morgan is a scarce coin of which only a fraction of all survivors is in MS grade. Above MS63 this piece becomes very challenging and in MS64 or above it is rare. If any PLs and DMPLs exist, they are essentially unknown.
Obverse Description
Portrait of Liberty centered. On the left are found 7 stars with the words E*PLURIBUS*UNUM followed by 6 stars on the right. The date is positioned at the bottom.
Reverse Description
The heraldic eagle is centered holding a bunch of arrows and branch surrounded by and olive leaves. The words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA * ONE DOLLAR frame the periphery. Mint mark, if any, appears above the letters DO of DOLLAR.

Key to Collecting: The 1887-O, 7 Over 6, overdate, VAM-3, is very scarce in all grades. The 1887-O, 7 Over 6, can be a cherrypicker’s delight, for although in recent years the certification services have been alert to the existence of 1887-O, 7 Over 6, there are many “raw” pieces that have never been studied for this feature. All known Mint State coins are in lower grades, seemingly indicating potential for finding some higher ones by carefully studying “regular” 1887-O dollars, some of which are gems (numerically, not necessarily from aspects of strike or luster).
Surface Quality: Lightly struck at the center, and some are very lightly struck. Luster ranges from dull to average, not deeply frosty.
Prooflike Coins: No prooflike examples have been seen or reported.
Mintage and Distribution: Struck from a single die pair and at the New Orleans Mint mixed with production from other presses. Examples were included in some Treasury releases, but no details are known.
VARIETIES:
1887-O, 7 Over 6—VAM-3. Overdate feature prominent only on early and medium states, after which it fades (and specimens are not desirable).
