While this coin grew somewhat more common over the decades with the discovery bag quantities in the mid 20th century. Still, it is a scarce coin, but one that can be had for a price. It is certainly more common in circulated grades than uncirculated, where pieces become notably scarce above MS63 and somewhat rare in MS65. A tiny handful are known above MS66. PLs and DMPLs are very scarce and extremely rare in Gem levels.
Obverse Description

The heraldic eagle is centered holding a bunch of arrows and branch surrounded by and olive leaves. The words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA * ONE DOLLAR frame the periphery. Mint mark, if any, appears above the letters DO of DOLLAR.

Key to Collecting: My comments for 1886-S are not much different from 1885-S: nearly all coins have excellent eye appeal, but some searching is needed to find a sharp strike. I suggest that MS-63 and MS-64 are grades that are eminently affordable to most advanced numismatists, and MS-65 coins are, of course, even more worthwhile. However, for most grades the 1886-S is rarer than the 1885-S.
Surface Quality: Above average strike is the rule for 1886-S, although very sharp strikes require some searching to find. The luster on the 1886-S is typically of high quality. This issue is reminiscent of certain San Francisco dollars earlier in the decade, when sharp strike and quality were the rule, not the exception.
Prooflike Coins: Prooflike coins are seen with some frequency, perhaps 20% or more coins having some prooflike characteristics. DMPL coins are seen occasionally.
Mintage and Distribution: Delivery figures by month: January–September, 0; October, 300,000; November, 300,000; December, 150,000. In 1886 it is likely that few 1886-S dollars were paid out. By the second decade of the twentieth century the variety was considered to be one of the great rarities in the series, exceeded only by the “impossible” 1889-S. Both issues were mostly stored in the San Francisco Mint. Beginning about 1942, and continuing until the 1950’s, the San Francisco Mint had quantities available for the asking, and many went to the Nevada casinos, but there was no numismatic market. In time, most hoard coins were circulated in the casinos, and many may have been melted under the Pittman Act in 1918. A few bags came out in Montana in 1956. By the time of the Treasury release of 1962 through 1964, quantities on hand were very small.
