The heraldic eagle is centered holding a bunch of arrows and branch surrounded by and olive leaves. The words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA * ONE DOLLAR frame the periphery. Mint mark, if any, appears above the letters DO of DOLLAR.

Key to Collecting: The 1886-O dollars are very common in worn grades today and exceedingly rare in choice to gem Mint State. Most all were released in the nineteenth century or melted in 1918, and few were ever saved for numismatic purposes.
Surface Quality: Striking varies from flat at the centers to fairly sharp, with most being quite decent. Cherrypicking is advised, to the extent that it can be done among Mint State coins, which are not often encountered. The luster on the 1886-O ranges from flat, grainy, and lifeless to fairly frosty, the last being in the distinct minority. Again, careful buying is advised, but this must be done over a period of time, as one certainly does not have the opportunity to view a significant number of 1886-O dollars side by side.
Prooflike Coins: Rare with prooflike surface on one side or the other. DMPL coins exist and are exceedingly rare and desirable if in high grades with good eye appeal.
Mintage and Distribution: Delivery figures by month: January, 900,000; February, 900,000; March, 900,000; April, 900,000; May, 900,000; June, 900,000; July, 600,000; August, 900,000; September, 910,000; October, 900,000; November, 1,000,000; December, 1,000,000. No hoards are known. A few bags are believed to have been paid out in the 1950’s, keeping this coin out of the rarity class at the time.

1886-O, Raised E on Reverse, VAM-1A: Among varieties, VAM-1A is significant. Raised E prominent below the eagle’s tail feathers, above the upper left of the ribbon bow.
