The 1885 Morgan dollar is an extremely common coin and is widely available in all circulated grades as well as uncirculated grades through MS66, above which this piece becomes scarce. It is especially tough in MS67 and in MS68 levels is exceptionally rare, though the handful of existing specimens in that grade range draw heavy bids from registry set collectors. PLs and DMPLs are much scarcer across the board than their typical MS counterparts but not impossibly so, as there are many survivors of each even into the MS65 territory. At MS66 and above they become rare.
Obverse Description
Portrait of Liberty centered. On the left are found 7 stars with the words E*PLURIBUS*UNUM followed by 6 stars on the right. The date is positioned at the bottom.
Reverse Description
The heraldic eagle is centered holding a bunch of arrows and branch surrounded by and olive leaves. The words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA * ONE DOLLAR frame the periphery. Mint mark, if any, appears above the letters DO of DOLLAR.

Key to Collecting: The 1885 Philadelphia Mint Morgan dollar has been common for a long time, far before the Treasury releases of the early 1960’s. Made in quantity, these pieces are seen today in varying degrees of eye appeal. Apart from the need to be selective as to quality, this will be an easy date to find.
Surface Quality: The striking is usually above average, but some hunting may be needed to find a particularly sharp piece. The luster is usually frosty, although many grainy pieces exist.
Prooflike Coins: Some dies are prooflike and are most attractive in the higher grades.
Mintage and Distribution: Delivery figures by month: January, 985,000; February, 900,000; March, 1,300,000; April, 1,400,000; May, 1,400,000; June, 1,400,000; July, 1,800,000; August, 1,800,000; September, 1,700,000; October, 1,700,000; November, 1,700,000; December, 1,700,000. This date seems to have been distributed steadily over a long period of time. In 1954, quantities of bags were distributed for the holiday demand, and in the 1962 through 1964 Treasury release the rest were paid out, by which time probably only a few hundred thousand remained.
PROOF STRIKES:
Mintage: 930. 2 obverse dies, 1 reverse die prepared. Delivery figures by month: January, 200; February, 0; March, 200; April–May, 0; June, 150; July–August, 0; September, 50; October– November, 0; December, 330.
Key to Collecting: Proofs are usually well struck. Medium cameo contrast. More than just a few of this date have been dipped so many times that the mirror surfaces are dull gray. Such coins are not for you.
VARIETIES:
At least 89 obverse and 88 reverse dies were used. In 1982 the VAM text described 20 combinations. None have dramatically different characteristics.
