The unprecedented crossover underscores his personal efforts to combat “grade inflation.”
The 1883-S is a better date, and while plenty of specimens exist in the circulated grades it becomes difficult to locate in the better grades -- particularly above MS63. Pieces grading MS64 are genuinely scarce and MS65s are extremely rare, with the few pieces grading higher commanding incredible premiums from collectors vying to build the best sets. PLs of any grade are legitimately rare and the tiny handful of DMPLs, none known in MS65 or better, command astronomical prices.
Obverse Description
Portrait of Liberty centered. On the left are found 7 stars with the words E*PLURIBUS*UNUM followed by 6 stars on the right. The date is positioned at the bottom.
Reverse Description
The heraldic eagle is centered holding a bunch of arrows and branch surrounded by and olive leaves. The words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA * ONE DOLLAR frame the periphery. Mint mark, if any, appears above the letters DO of DOLLAR.
Book Reference
Key to Collecting: Following the run of numismatically available San Francisco coins from 1878 through 1882, now with the 1883-S we encounter a key issue. In contrast with the earlier dates, the 1883-S is very diffcult to find, especially at higher Mint State levels. Among 1883-S dollars, bagmarks are a significant problem. These must have been stored and handled roughly.
Surface Quality: The 1883-S usually is seen with above average to quite sharp strike, quite attractive. The luster ranges from medium frosty to deep and is generally pleasing to the eye.
Prooflike Coins: Some dies are prooflike, but not necessarily deeply mirrored. Among 1883-S dollars in Mint State, these are encountered with regularity, that is, when Mint State pieces themselves are found—for all 1883-S dollars are elusive at that grade level. DMPL coins are exceedingly rare.
Mintage and Distribution: The distribution of the 1883-S began in large quantity soon after the mintage, with the result that examples in all grades were available to numismatists generations ago. However, by the 1940’s the issue was viewed as scarce. In the 1950’s some bags were released, but probably just a few. At least part of a bag found its way to Nevada investor LaVere Redfield. I am not aware of any quantities in the 1962 through 1964 Treasury release.
VARIETIES:
The VAM text lists seven different die varieties, none of which has achieved wide popularity.
