The unprecedented crossover underscores his personal efforts to combat “grade inflation.”
The 1883-CC Morgan dollar is one of the most common CC-mint issues in the series, with bag quantities discovered in U.S. Treasury vaults. These were distributed as singles to collectors during the silver dollar sale offered by the General Services Administration in the 1970s and early 1980s. Many of these pieces exhibit great strike and luster, with many Gem survivors up through the MS66 range, above which pieces become much scarcer. PLs and DMPLs are surely scarcer than typical MS strikes, but they aren't necessarily rare, just more expensive because of the demand for these pieces.
Obverse Description
Portrait of Liberty centered. On the left are found 7 stars with the words E*PLURIBUS*UNUM followed by 6 stars on the right. The date is positioned at the bottom.
Reverse Description
The heraldic eagle is centered holding a bunch of arrows and branch surrounded by and olive leaves. The words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA * ONE DOLLAR frame the periphery. Mint mark, if any, appears above the letters DO of DOLLAR.
Book Reference
Key to Collecting: The 1883-CC joins the 1882-CC and 1884-CC as one of a trio of very plentiful Carson City dollars in Mint State. There is a great pride of possession for such a piece as nearly all are well struck and very attractive, this in combination with a reasonable market price.
Surface Quality: The 1883-CC is typically seen well struck. Usually seen with deep, frosty luster, bright and attractive.
Prooflike Coins: Some dies are prooflike, often deeply mirrored and with cameo or frosted devices, quite like a Philadelphia Mint Proof except for certain aspects of the edge treatment and, of course, the telltale mintmark. Some have DMPL fields, but with auras of satiny frost close to the outline of Liberty’s portrait and the edges of the eagle.
Mintage and Distribution: Most of the mintage was shipped to the Treasury Building in Washington, D.C., after the mint ceased operations in 1899. Afterward, bags were paid out on occasion, including in 1938 and 1939. Others were available in quantity in the early 1950’s, but the market value of a bag was not suffcient to encourage trade. In 1955 about 50 bags came out and mostly went into numismatic hands. After the great Treasury release was halted in March 1964, the General Services Administration holding of 1883-CC dollars totaled 755,518, or 62.75% of the original mintage, per a later inventory.32
