Book Reference

Key to Collecting: The 1882-O, O Over S, is a worthwhile addition to your collection, with a reasonable grade goal being MS-63 or MS-64, not because of price, but because pieces at higher levels are virtually impossible to find. Beyond that, be sure to buy one with the overmintmark distinct under a good 4x glass. On some the under-S is weak, and these should be avoided. Traces of die rust are normal and not a negative factor.

Surface Quality: Striking varies from sharp to weak. On all known examples there is graininess in some areas, due to tiny raised dots from light rust pits in the dies.

Prooflike Coins: In 1982, Wayne Miller reported that he had “seen two or three [prooflike] pieces; none evidenced any die pitting.”29 A few DMPL coins have been certified in low Mint State grades.

Mintage and Distribution: Little is known of the specific mintage and distribution of this overmintmark, as it was not closely studied until recent decades. Examples have been found mixed with quantities of regular 1882-O dollars as a tiny percentage of those in certain bags. Note: Prices are for coins with a strong overdate. Less-prominent overdates have lower values.

VARIETIES:

1882-O, O Over S: VAM-3 (O Over S Flush), VAM-4 (O Over S Recessed), and VAM-5 (O Over S Broken). VAM-3 in most die states may be the best bet, but even these can be weak.
