The unprecedented crossover underscores his personal efforts to combat “grade inflation.”

Book Reference
Key to Collecting: The 1881 dollar was struck in large quantities. The sharpness of striking varies widely on coins seen today, as does the quality of the luster. However, there is no shortage of “average” pieces in the marketplace. Sharply struck, lustrous coins with superb eye appeal are hard to find and mount a challenge for the serious collector.
Surface Quality: Most 1881 dollars are well struck on obverse and reverse, although below-average pieces are seen on occasion, these with light definition at the centers. The luster of the 1881 varies from grainy or “greasy” to lustrous and frosty.
Prooflike Coins: Some dies are with prooflike surface and are in the distinct minority.
Mintage and Distribution: The 1881 dollar was so common in the East in the 1950’s that the coins were a nuisance to collectors who looked through bank bags. To these were added many Mint-sealed bags that were released circa 1955. By the time of the Treasury release in 1962 through 1964, this was not a date talked about when bags were discussed, but individual coins remained common.
PROOF STRIKES:
Mintage: 984. Two die pairs made, but only one known to have been used (with slight repunching). One reverse also used in 1882. Mintage by quarters: 700, 40, 0, 349; some melted.
Key to Collecting: Excellent strike and deep cameo contrast go together on most pieces.
VARIETIES:
There are mostly minor varieties from 59 obverse and 47 reverse dies made, but the number used is not known.
