Book Reference
Key to Collecting: The 1881-CC dollar is easy to find in Mint State, often with deep luster and good strike. The low mintage of this issue and the popular Carson City mintmark contribute to the desirability. In worn grades this is one of the rarest dollars in the series!
Surface Quality: The strike is usually excellent on the 1881-CC, with good definition of the hair details and the eagle’s breast feathers. Wayne Miller suggested that, “on the whole the 1881-CC is probably the highest quality Morgan dollar struck at the Carson City Mint.”20 The luster is typically deep and frosty, yielding a very attractive coin.
Prooflike Coins: Many 1881-CC have semi-prooflike surfaces and can be attractive if not heavily bagmarked.
Mintage and Distribution: No dollars were minted from April 1 to October 1, 1881, contributing to a low production for this year. Relatively few were released in the 1880’s. Quantities were stored, including in the Treasury Building in Washington, D.C. Many were paid out in the 1930’s and at least a few bags more in 1954. After the great Treasury release was halted in March 1964, the General Services Administration holding of 1881-CC dollars totaled 147,485, or 49.82% of the original mintage, per a later inventory.21
VARIETIES:
Although the Van Allen–Mallis text lists six different varieties from 25 pairs of dies sent to the mint, none are dramatically distinctive.
