Book Reference

Key to Collecting: The 1876 Shield nickel is of medium scarcity. Mint State coins come on the market with frequency, but not as often as Mint State coins of the more plentiful dates (e.g., the 1860’s, 1882, and 1883). The MS-62 to 64 range is typical. A properly graded MS-65 or finer coin, if well struck and with good eye appeal, is a rare find indeed.

Proofs exist in fair quantity, but often lack eye appeal. Some searching is required to find one that is PF-65 or better, deeply mirrorlike in all field areas, and with good eye appeal.

CIRCULATION STRIKES:

Characteristics and Appearance: As multiple pairs of dies were used, sharpness and other aspects vary. Examples with Full Details (FD) and good luster are hard to find.

PROOF STRIKES:

Characteristics and Appearance: At least two obverse dies were used. Usually well struck. The quality of mirror surface varies, but deeply mirrored pieces can be found. Some are mirrorlike on the obverse and slightly satiny on the reverse.

VARIETIES:

Tripled-Die Obverse: FS-101, F-04. Strongly tripled die. URS-6.
